The Best Boston Has To Offer

Well it's been about a year that I've been living near Boston. In that time I've been able to see a ton of shows in and around the city (not counting the four years of undergrad I spent commuting to the city to mosh). And in that time I've had the pleasure of being to some of the best clubs Boston has to offer, so I figured I'd let you in on some of my favorites.

House of Blues - Boston

The HOB just opened it's doors early this year, and has quickly become the gem of Lansdowne Street. Taking over where the Avalon and Axis once stood, the HOB boasts a 2,500 person capacity, three levels of viewing and at least

one bar on every level. So far their line-up has been nothing short of stellar. Jimmy Eat World, Bayside and New Found Glory have already taken the stage. Rise Against, Rancid, Taking Back Sunday, Anberlin and Envy on the Coast are all set to perform this summer. Intimate, yet large enough to support bigger acts, the HOB has got my vote of approval.

Harper's Ferry - Allston, MA

Located in the heart of Allston Rock City, Harper's stands as one of the greatest clubs Boston has to offer. It's small, so seeing one of your favorite bands play here is like having them play in your parent's basement. You can always

meet up with the band before or after the set. Chances are they'll be walking around the little dig. If that isn't enough to hook you, check out their bar. This place has got the cleanest, coldest and best tasting beer I've ever had from a tap. You won't be disappointed.

T.T. the Bear's - Cambridge, MA

This place is great if you're into the local scene, or just seeing live music seven nights a week. Every once in a while T.T.'s hosts a bigger act such as Rise Against who packed the small club last October. Check out a video I did with the band from that show here. The place is really easy to find too. Just a short walk from the red line, and located directly next to the Middle East, T.T.'s screams locality. A staple for any Boston scenster.

The Middle East - Cambridge, MA

Speak of the devil. Yep, the Middle East, as I was saying, is yet another jewel in Boston's rock club line-up. Right on Mass. Ave., the club is easy to get to. Be sure to check out the upstairs for a drink and bite to eat before heading downstairs to the stage area. If you're of legal age feel free to grab a wristband and hang in the 21+ area. It's right off to the side of the stage, and gets you practically front row. They've got seats in the back for you, and a bar serving cheap beer and free water (trust me, free water is a big deal). You don't get that kind of deal in the Hartford scene. Rock on Boston.

Newbury Comics - Norwood, MA

In the mood for something acoustic? Want to meet your favorite band, and then shop for some vinyl? Well the Newbury Comics in Norwood has got you covered. It's huge, so you can get anything your little heart desires. And then after that feel free to watch a quick acoustic set on NC's small stage near the back of the store. Since the place opened up late last year everyone from Bayside to Rise Against and Taking Back Sunday have hit this place to connect with their fans. It's a little out of the way, but hey, isn't the journey half the fun?

Well, now you know where to go. So get off your ass, and start moshing. I'm pretty sure each one of these places has got a sweet line-up for the summer. Check it out... and then let me know how it goes. Have fun!

Digital Magazines? How Do You Read That on the Toilet?

It's no surprise that the field of print journalism is dying quicker than Sum 41's career, and as sorry as I am to say it, we in the punk scene are not immune to it. Last week our monthly issued Bible, Alternative Press, officially started an online version of its magazine.

Now, even though it's quite cool that you'll be able to access AP virtually anywhere from your iphone, I can't help but think this might be the end of our hardcopy. This has been a trend lately in the industry. We as readers are slowly seeing the downsizing of the industry. A while back Rolling Stone Magazine, famous for its oversized rag, downsized to your normal run-of-the-mill 8.5 x 11 inch sizing.

Unfortunately, it didn't stop there. Apparently the idea spread around the entertainment industry, and soon enough we saw AP downsizing its very own specially sized magazine.

They kept going, too. If you were a subscriber of AP before October of last year, you'd know that not only did you get your mag a week earlier than everyone else, but you also got a special subscribers only cover. Well, cross that off your list. In the craze to pinch pennies, AP decided to discontinue subscriber only covers.

Personally, I think that's a bunch of garbage. Part of the reason I subscribed to AP was for that subscriber only cover. It was always the best looking picture, and was a great collectors item. (And we all know how everyone in our scene is a collector of something or other)

So what's to make of this? I guess we can complain over and over again, but I don't think anything is going to change. Fact of the matter is that we've got to get used to the idea that most likely, within the next few years, most of what we read will be online.

But it's not all that bad. Hell, you're reading this right now, and... well... you can only get it online. Thanks for checking it out.

Pop-Punk Playlist, Summer '09

Summer is just around the corner which means you'll be driving to a ton of shows, band practices and Taco Bell well after 1 in the morning. So of course, you're going to need some good music to pump through your speakers. That's why I've decided to give you a little help with this playlist of my top 10 pop-punk songs for summer '09. With any luck, this selection can be the soundtrack to your summer.

Capital H - Motion City Soundtrack

This song is like an appetizer to all things pop-punk. MCS's brilliant mix of crunchy guitars and synthesized

melodies via Jesse Johnson's Moog make Capital H a tune that's going to be stuck in your head all summer. I mean, how could you not love a song with lyrics like: Singing songs from the balcony as the city crumbles/Under the powers of an evil doctor rocket science monster/With capabilities to destroy the entire universe. Amazing.

All Downhill From Here - New Found Glory

It's okay to be a little nostalgic for the summer of 2004 so long as you can still rock out to this instant classic off NFG's Catalyst record. All Downhill From Here is the perfect song to accent your playlist. It's fast, catchy and just makes you wanna mosh until you pass out, or die from laughing that you and your friends are actually moshing in your parents' basement. Which ever comes first.

Burn This City - Cartel

This pop-punk track off Cartel's Chroma is an anthem to youth. It's perfect for summer listening. Complete with group sing alongs, palm muted guitars and a vocal range that only Cartel's Will Pugh could hit, Burn This City will burn itself into your memory as a song you've just got to come back to every summer.

Reckless Abandon - Blink 182

You didn't think I'd forget about Blink, did you? Reckless Abandon describes pretty much every party you've ever been to, and any party you will go to this summer. Smashing windows, eating pizza, having your dog mistakenly eat your special brownies and finally getting some...in a parking lot. It's all in there.

Anthem, Part 2 - Blink 182

Okay, no summer pop-punk mix would be complete with only one Blink song! That's why Anthem

has got to be in there. It's probably one of Blink's catchiest songs that didn't make radio. Just let yourself get lost in Tom Delonge's angelic voice and Mark Hoppus' perfect bass playing. Hell, while you're at it, why don't you just listen to all of Take Off Your Pants and Jacket. It can be your backup when you drunkly lose this mix CD at the beach.

Alex In Wonderland - This Time Next Year

A modern pop-punk masterpiece, Alex In Wonderland is bound to get you singing horribly out of key in your car. Maybe I like it so much because it starts with a drum intro so reminiscent of Blink-182's First Date that you'll be playing both songs over each other to see if there's any difference. Really though, there's not. Check out their video for Alex in Wonderland right here.

Party Scene - All Time Low

I'll admit it, I totally dig this ATL song. Look, if it wasn't for all their 14 year-old fans, I might actually go see them in concert. Until then, I am more than happy to listen to Party Scene off ATL's Put Up or Shut Up. Be ready to toe-tap your way through Warped Tour traffic with this one.

Basket Case - Green Day

While everyone's busy this summer talking about Green Day's latest release, 21st Century Breakdown,

you can rock it old-school style with Basket Case. The best part is that you can actually say you were alive when Dookie came out in 1994. Hell, you were almost 10. That gives you a lot more street cred than those 10 year-olds buying Breakdown this week. Rock on dude, or should I say sir?

Bouncing Off The Walls - Sugarcult

Yea, this song was in National Lampoon's Van Wilder, which makes it just awesome. Duh. Anyway, you can't go wrong with the song that put Sugarcult on the punk rock map. Bouncing Off The Walls is a dance anthem, so be ready to get looks and stares from everyone you pass on the road while on your way to Dairy Queen.

The Patron Saint of Liars and Fakes - Fall Out Boy

I know it seems like a long way away, but when summer's ending, let this FOB jam be the one to play you out. It finished off Take This to Your Grave beautifully, and will do the same for your '09 playlist. Trust me. Seriously, can you think of a better song to be jamming to mid-August while driving around at dusk? I didn't think so. Enjoy.

So there you have it. You're all set for summer '09. Well, musically at least. Drink up and stay cool kids. It's going to be a scorcher out there!

An Indie Christmas

Hello avid reader. I am back from my month long hiatus. I took some time to reevaluate the alternative scene, and tried to find something positive. Luckily, I did - and it came at a 30 percent discount.

I'm talking about this year's Record Store Day, of course. It's the one day a year where all of us indie kids

can celebrate our holiday. This year marked the third annual RSD, where over 700 independently owned record stores across the country came together to give us music nerds some huge discounts.

I was lucky enough to hit up two Newbury Comics here north of Boston, and found some awesome deals. They were offering a 30 percent discount on all used CDs, and 20 percent off all vinyl. To feed my newly found hunger for rare music memorabilia I headed over to the Burlington store with one of my favorite readers of this blog (also my drummer).

Inside we found some awesome stuff. We were able to score a whole bunch of free vinyl, including a Kings Of Leon 7-inch. They were also giving away tons of free stickers, buttons and even pint glasses.

We did some shopping, too. I snagged three old blink-182 single CDs, which each came with a few live songs. Taking Back Sunday released a special vinyl with a few songs off their upcoming CD, which my partner-in-crime picked up. I was also able to grab AFI's Love Like Winter on 7-inch, as well as New Found Glory's Listen To Your Friends on blue vinyl. Sweat deal.

We left the Burlington Newbury Comics totally pumped about our small vinyl collection and bag full of free stuff. That's when we decided that hitting the Peabody store would pay off, too. Twenty minutes up 128 and we were there.

It was a quick trip, and within minutes we were out the door with a used copy of The Mark, Tom, and Travis Show, which was snagged for a mere $14 (I dare you to find a better deal anywhere...or a copy of it for that matter), as well as a 12-inch My Chemical Romance vinyl. And once again, bags of free stuff including Duffy and the Hollywood Undead on vinyl. Go ahead, laugh.

It was a great day. The stores were packed, and the vibe was totally relaxed in that chill-indie-kid-mood sort of way.

Be on the look out for next year's RSD, sometime in April as usual. We didn't stick around until the afternoon, but many stores opt for in-store performances later in the day from bands ranging from local musicians to Disturbed. Remember them? Yeah, they were in Maine this year at a Bull Moose. Weird.

And on an unrelated note, I hit NC this past weekend for a post-RSD shopping spree and picked myself up a blue 7-inch vinyl of blink-182's They Came To Conquer...Uranus. Yeah, that's right, an original copy released in 1995 featuring the songs Wrecked Him, Waggy and Zulu. The back cover has even got photos of Mark, Tom and Scott (yep, Scott Raynor, blink's original drummer). It's okay to be jealous.

Side Projects - Love 'em or Leave 'em

Side projects. They're taking over our scene. Everyone and their mother seems to have some sort of "other band" to play with while their main venture is on hiatus. Whether it's in the popular electronic movement, or something a bit more acoustic, side projects are forming, reforming and disappearing quick. So to help you out, I've decided to give you a list of who to check out and who to down right ignore.

Check out:

Cinematic Sunrise

Ahh, the first side project from Mr. Craig Owens of Chiodos. With a catchy back-to-basics punk

rock feel, CS leaves you a little less weathered than a normal Chiodos record does. No insane screaming and no off key vocal stretches give CS a sound reminiscent of The Academy Is... or Jimmy Eat World. Mixed with keys and dual guitars you've got a recipe for great music. Be sure to check them out, as well as Owens newest side project, Isles & Glaciers.

The Almost

Any fans of Underoath might be surprised to see the softer side of their drummer Aaron Gillespie with The Almost. No worries though, Gillespie's new band deliver the goods. Citing their Christian faith as their main influence, The Almost rocketed onto the scene a few years back with their hit "Say This Sooner." Since then they've put out an EP entitled "No Gift To Bring," and hit a few tours including one with Paramore and the Warped Tour. Catchy, heavy, soft and awesome sum these guys up. Give them a listen.

William Control

The solo side project from Wil Francis of Aiden is an electric whirlwind of murder, sex and the London underground. It's dark and pessimistic and leaves you a bit pissed off at your ex. The beat does get you tapping your foot though. I wouldn't suggest listening to this while going to sleep, seeing as the end of the record is an actual 911 call from an old woman getting murdered. Yikes! But overall, WC is worth a listen if you're in a horror movie sort of mood.

Plus 44, Angels and Airwaves, Transplants, Boxcar Racer

I grouped these all together because as we all know, they're the side projects from our blink boys. All well worth a listen. Plus and Boxcar give you that real punk/blink feel. AVA takes you on an electronic ride through space, and the Transplants are about as close to the LA hardcore scene as you want to get. Eclectic is the best way to describe these bands. Check them out if you haven't already.

Forget About:

The Color Fred

Let's just say this side project is probably why we haven't heard anything from Taking Back Sunday in ages. Guitarist Fred Mascherino started this band after leaving TBS a few years back. Though catchy and pop filled, the music is not on par with TBS stuff. Mascherino is better suited as a back up singer than a lead. They're worth a quick listen, but don't waste your money on the album. It's kind of funny though, TCF is on tour right now with Craig Owens. Oh, side projects. How silly.

Person L

We all loved The Starting Line, and then they had to go and break up in the height of their career. Lead singer Kenny Vasoli decided, at 23, to start a side project called Person L. Coming in a lot more mellow, and a lot more acoustic, Person L can easily be forgotten about while playing on your itunes or at a show. Trust me, I saw them once. Cool, but nothing too memorable.

Sonny

Sonny Moore is finally back from hiding. Ever since he left From First To Last, the music world has been awaiting his return via his self-titled project. He's on tour right now, but not really worth checking out. Don't count on anything remotely close to FFTL from Sonny. His new work is completely electronic with virtually no singing at all. The music sounds more like a club beat rather than punk rock. It's very disappointing. Heck no to techno kids.

The Internet's Fourth Most Dangerous Word - Emo

Emo.

It's a word that's starting to generate quite a buzz. It seems that no one wants to be associated with it anymore.

Over the past few years "emo" has evolved from a term describing emotionally charged music into an insult.

No one associates it with good music anymore.

Perhaps that's because of an endless stream of bad fashion choices (see Gabe Saporta at right), horrid rap/rock acts taking over Warped Tour (see 3oh!3, Brokencyde) and every teenage kid thinking they can identify with a scene they know nothing about. Let's be real, what 15 year old has ever had his/her heart shattered? Quit bitching, and just take the trash out like your dad asked you to.

Well, it looks like those damn kids have once again ruined what we love. This week Sentry, an internet parental control organization, released a list of the top 10 words parents are monitoring and blocking from their children. "Emo" was ranked the fourth most dangerous word.

Seriously? What about the word "emo" poses a threat to teens? Is it the stereotype that if your child is "emo" he/she will cut themselves and be depressed all the time? I'm pretty sure "emo" actually refers back to those bands who used their emotional side to make great music (see Jimmy Eat World).

Either way, "emo" came in fourth on this list of most parentally monitored internet searches:

Maybe it's just me, but I think this is ridiculous. It's been blown out of the water. How horrible was it when My

Chemical Romance was accused of being a "suicide-cult" by the British media because of the death of a fan? A coroner stated that the fan's suicide was to be blamed on "emo" music's obsession with death. Right, because we're all just so dark. It's absurd and opinionated.

If your kid is looking up suicide and depression on the internet, how about you try talking to them and figuring out what the problem is instead of giving them restrictions. I blame this on bad parenting and the disconnected youth of America that never learned the true meaning of music. What a shame.

Five Bands You Should Know

It's becoming really hard to find new music that fits your style with so many bands popping up overnight on myspace and purevolume. If you're having a tough time, check out this short list of five bands you should know. With any luck, you'll be hearing more of them in the future.

Me Verse You - St. Louis, MO

Me Verse You are fresh to the scene. Members Dave Schroeder and Joseph

Hamilton started this group up after their last outfit, So They Say, disbanded in 2008. After changing their name from The Audio to the much cooler Me Verse You, and getting the line-up straight, the guys recorded their first record under Matt Hyde. The album entitled Another Enemy is not in stores just yet (no formal release date has been given either). You can still check them out via myspace. Their music is a great mix of punk-rock and pop influences. Be sure to listen to "Come On Baby" and the album sampler they have up. Hopefully in '09, these guys will be the next big thing.

Our Lunar Activities - United Kingdom

Any blink-182 fans out there? You'll be pleased to know that Our Lunar Activities

had their latest album produced by none other than Mr. Mark Hoppus. Apparently, Hoppus hooked up with OLA in 2008 and invited them to record with him and Chris Holmes (New Found Glory). They currently have a few shows coming up in California and some overseas. They've got a soft-punk sort of sound to them. Be sure to listen to "It Comes In Waves" and "Break My Fall" on their myspace. Check out some of them recording with the master.

These Green Eyes - New Haven, CT

These Green Eyes can finally give Connecticut a good name in the music scene. With a new album set for release at the end of this month, they're heading to the top. They have all the qualities of a great punk act. Heartfelt lyrics, driving guitars, catchy licks and a lead singer that the audience can actually relate to. The east coast sound they have has landed TGE a spot at both Bamboozle and Warped Tour this summer. Check out "Crimson" and "Self-Inflicted."

Broadway Calls - Rainier, OR

This grassroots punk band just recently signed to SideOneDummy Records. Fresh off a European tour with Alkaline Trio, BC is back in the studio recording their new record. They say they have close to 20 new songs that are being looked at for the album. Hopefully, BC can hold on to their do-it-yourself style and sound. It'd be nice to hear a band out there that still has that basement feel to their music. All the 80s synthesizer garbage today is already getting old. Be sure to listen to "Classless Reunion" and "Back To Oregon" for a real taste of BC.

LoveHateHero - Los Angeles, CA

Post-Hardcore up-comers LHH are a crazy bunch rockers that are out to shred your face off.

They've secured a few dates on this year's Warped Tour, but don't seem to be doing much else. Last year was pretty big for them though.They had a South American tour, and guitarist Kevin Thrasher was an internet hit with his ins ane guitar lesson videos. Be sure to check out LHH's "Amity" to get all that head-banging out of your system.

Punk Goes Pop 2 Review

My addiction is worsening. It seems like every chance I get I need a hit. I can't stop - listening to the new Punk Goes Pop 2 album that is. The record dropped in stores Tuesday, and it's already on repeat on my ipod and currently occupying the stereo in my car. Plain and simple - it's awesome. Thus said, we need to talk about it. So here we go, song by song.

What Goes Around... by Justin Timberlake

Covered by Alesana

The first song on the album starts out quick. The guitars and drums are heavy and quick. The singing is melodic during the verses, and wicked heavy during the breakdowns and choruses. I'm talking high-pitched screaming, but it works so well. Not something you would expect for a Justin Timberlake cover, but isn't that what makes it punk? This song just makes you want to mosh, which is just awesome given JT belted out the original with a piano.

Apologize by One Republic

Covered by Silverstein

Another thumbs-up. Silverstein did a great job of staying true to this song. It sounds like the original, only heavier. The gain on those amps was turned up just a tad, and some palm-muting make for a fuller version of the One Republic hit. Plus, the breakdown has got some of that awesome screaming that Silverstein are known for. This one will get stuck in your head, trust me.

Baby One More Time by Britney Spears

Covered by August Burns Red

This one comes in as one of my least favorites on the record. It's got to be because the whole song is just screaming. Now, don't get me wrong, I love screamo as much as the next scene kid, but this is a little much. Besides, the actual music seems a little off. The guitars scream too much, and the drums are too fast for a Brit cover. I'm just not feeling it, but to each their own.

When I Grow Up by The Pussycat Dolls

Covered by Mayday Parade

Mayday gives this song an almost creepy feel during the verses. But then again, The Pussycat Dolls are pretty creepy in general, so it works. Anyway, the choruses and breakdowns are alright. You get a punk feel from the band and the singing. And I mean, it's just plain funny to hear a dude say, "I wanna have boobies." It passes.

Over My Head (Cable Car) by The Fray

Covered by A Day To Remember

Easily one of the best songs on the album. There is an awesome use of crunchy guitars, screams, pick-slides and melody. If the original version gets stuck in your head, expect ADTR's version to stay that way for days. "Over My Head" blows their cover of Kelly Clarkson's "Since You've Been Gone" out of the water. Listen to it, love it. Seriously.

Smooth by Santana

Covered by Escape The Fate

This song fits perfectly with ETF. It's packed with dirty guitar riffs, a smooth rhythm and lyrics worthy of Craig Mabbitt's style. Not too many screams in this one, which works. The solos are dead on too, which is what Santana is known for. It's a nice mix into the track listing. I mean, who doesn't love this song in its original form? ETF just made it cool for us to admit it openly now, so hell yes. Rock on.

Ice Box by Omarion

Covered by There For Tomorrow

Umm... Is it bad to admit that I've never heard the original of this song before? Is it bad I don't know who Omarion is? Uhh... Is it bad that I've never heard of There For Tomorrow either? All in all, I've got nothing for this song. I don't like it enough to listen to it, and since the artists here are as foreign to me as the Italian language, I'm just going to stay neutral on it.

Flagpole Sitta by Harvey Danger

Covered by Chiodos

I never really liked this song much in it's original, but Chiodos do a good job with it. "I'm not sick, but I'm not well" just seems fitting for Craig Owens to sing. Every article out there about that guy has got something to do with his semi-messed up head. So keep it up Chiodos, we like it. The guitars and such work nicely with the singing, and finally, a song without intense screaming.

Beautiful Girls by Sean Kingston

Covered by Bayside

If you know me, you know I've got a soft-spot for Bayside, but this song is really awesome. The original gets you bobbing your head, and so does Bayside's rendition. Anthony Raneri's raspy voice works so well with the song. There are the classic Bayside crunchy guitars mixed with a plethora of drum beats and a subtle bass line. There are even a few "Doo-Wops" toward the end. What can be better? A+ boys, another song that will keep us hooked.

See You Again by Miley Cyrus

Covered by Breathe Carolina

If your motto is "Heck No To Techno," don't listen to this song. Synth-pop-punk would sum this one up. Now, it sounds cool if you're in the right mood. (That mood being pre-club on a Thursday night where you are ready to dance out the week's frustrations) There are a few screams that make it punk, I suppose. Breathe Carolina do switch up a few lyrics too, and they just so happen to be my favorite ones in the song. "My best friend Leslie said, 'Oh, she's just being Miley'" has become "When all my friends say, 'You're just being crazy.'" It's a little sad. Overall though, a cool song. I'd still like to see someone cover a harder version of this song someday. (Maybe Forget The Future will do it? wink-wink)

Disturbia by Rihanna

Covered by The Cab

Now, normally I wouldn't listen to The Cab, but these boys hit this song just right. The only way to describe it is punk meets pop. It's perfect. They stay true to the original, but it's a punk song. It hooks you worse that Rihanna's original. Plus the chorus will hit you harder than Chris Brown. It'll have you singing all the way to court.

Toxic by Britney Spears

Covered by A Static Lullaby

Yes, the pop-princess has two songs covered on this record. This song goes up in my top three for the whole album though. It's hardcore, it's screamo, it's punk and it's Britney Spears. The video is insane. The guitars tear through the verse, build-up and chorus. ASL nailed this one. One thing I can't figure out though, is it okay for me to blast this in my car? I mean, it's screamo and such, but at the same time it's Brit. How are people going to react? Who cares, I'm cranking this one up kids.

Love Song by Sara Bareilles

Covered by Four Year Strong

This pop song has been turned into what I like to call East Coast punk-rock. Four Year Strong hail from Worcester, Massachusetts. Their version of "Love Song" is sped-up and rough around the edges, just like any music coming from the Northeast. It's pretty sweet though. Forget the piano Bareilles, FYS's version takes full use the overdrive knob and some nice cymbal action. "Love Song" will get you going, I promise.

I Kissed A Girl by Katy Perry

Covered by Attack Attack!

Okay, I'll clear this up. This Attack Attack! are from Columbus, Ohio. Don't get them confused with the British band with the same name. Big no-no. Anyway, this album wouldn't be complete without Katy Perry being covered. Attack Attack! do a decent job with it. Once again it's techno heavy, but it's cool. The insane screamo/metal breakdown brings you back to punk. You might want to dance while listening to this one though, which is completely okay so long as it's not in public. All in all, good song. And for their sake, I hope the band really did get to kiss a girl. At least someone's getting some.

So there you have it kids, my take on Punk Goes Pop 2. Overall, it's an awesome album, and worth the buy. Word to the wise though, these songs will get stuck in your head. Just give in, it's so much fun. Anyway, feel free to leave your comments and thoughts about the songs. Maybe I missed something, or even better, maybe I pissed you off. I hope I pissed you off, or made you laugh. Either way, enjoy kids.

When Pop Meets Punk

I recently filled out a survey on Facebook that asked me to tell the world 25 facts about myself. In doing so I was able to conjure up some nostalgic memories about the music scene I have loved for so long. I think around number five it hit me: I miss when pop-punk was pop-punk.

Does that make any sense? Maybe? Okay, I'll explain my thinking there.

Growing up I listened to so many awesome pop-punk bands (pop-punk was yet to be a genre by the way). There was Green Day, American Hi-Fi, New Found Glory, blink-182 and even to some extent Sum 41 and Good Charlotte. It was a selective group, and it was fun.

Then the rest of the world wanted in on the good times. They turned pop-punk into a fashion trend, complete with perfectly manicured pretty boys. And the last few years have shown just how 'popular' pop-punk has become. Personally, I think this is BS.

Even original pop-punk had some grit and grease around the edges. Remember? Funny colored hair, no fashion sense and a snotty sense of humor.

Well, that all seems gone now. And I have a list of bands I'd like to blame. Here they are:

All Time Low

These kids are barely old enough to legally drink and they're gracing the cover of Alternative Press as 'Band of the Year.' Garbage. They are far too pretty to be punk. Secondly, their music really isn't that good. Imagine listening to New Found Glory with the whinny-voice knob on the PA system turned all the way up. You can't even understand these boys. They're a fashion statement, and their concerts are packed with nothing but little girls. I'd like to think of them as what the Jonas Brothers would have been had they not signed with Disney. Lame.

We The Kings

These odd-balls hit the scene last summer.

I think they got popular via their music video being played at American Eagle. It must have been that stupid 'Skyway Avenue' song. How original boys. No one ever had a similar song called 'Ocean Avenue.' (cough-Yellowcard-cough) Complete with the in-style haircuts, these tools took Warped Tour by storm. Again, lame. I think I am most critical of this band because a certain ex of mine loved them. I blame the redhead lead singer for the worst

break-up of my life. Thanks boys. You suck.

Metro Station

Now, while I know everyone likes to 'Shake-Shake It,' I can't see these guys ever having a legit career in music. Well, unless they buy their way into the business. Oh wait, they can do that. The freakin' guitarist is Miley Cyrus' brother! What the hell?

Can't I catch a break? No? Okay fine, I'll keep going.

Boys Like Girls

Well, I think their run is starting to die out. Thank God. They were pretty big for a while, though I don't know how. Pretty hair and arrogant attitudes always brings the 'tween' girls out in full force. Hopefully there's no renaissance with them.

Cute Is What We Aim For

The name says it all. Period.

Okay, so like most of my posts, I could go on forever but I am going to stop myself here. I'm afraid if I do keep going I might just call up that certain ex saying how all this crappy music is making me think of her. Well that's just not cool. I think I'll throw on some New Found Glory - 'My Friends Over You' and mellow out here. Here, watch the video. Yep, it's from 'Flake-and-Bake.' Enjoy.

Don't Judge a Book by its Cover

You know what? I am sick of people looking at me and the bands I listen to like we're uneducated drunks who just like to slam on guitars and scream into microphones. Credit needs to be given where credit is due. And folks, I'd like to point out that these alternative bands, as well as myself, are educated and have an amazing sense of literature which they have woven into their music and messages.

The list could go on forever, but I'll try to keep it short.

First, let me start with a little band known as Envy On The Coast. These boys, in their early 20s, have

exploded onto the scene with a sound all their own. But not without a little help from a poet named Homer.

Remember, he wrote the Iliad and the Odyssey. You probably read them a long time ago. Anyway, EOTC are familiar with these epics, and have pulled on ideas from the Odyssey to form their latest album Lucy Gray.

Check out how the 12th song entitled "I'm Breathing...Are You Breathing Too?" starts:

No, there is no Odyssey.

There's no Penelope,

just maids and suitors.

Hmm. Kind of makes you think they read it, huh?

Let's move onto a band named Silverstein. Yes, they got their name from writer Shel Silverstein, but that's not the point. Have a listen to a song named "Your Sword vs. My Dagger" and you might just hear some hints to this old English dude named Shakespeare. That's right, everybody's favorite. Weird, these guys kind of understand his writing.

Not enough to convince you? Okay, well let's take a look a some hot names in the alternative scene. We'll just see how disconnected from literature these bands really are. Would anyone like to know where the band Chiodos got the name for their last album? It was named Bone Palace Ballet. That's funny, I seem to remember an author

named Charles Bukowski releasing a few poems aptly named Bone Palace Ballet. Since Bukowski's work came out in 1998, I'm assuming lead singer Craig Owens read it, and decided it would be fitting for his band's 2007 release. Wait, he must have read it? Yes.

Oh, and while we're talking about Bukowski, let's not forget another one of his works entitled The Pleasures of the Damned. Sound sort of familiar, kids? That's right, Bayside played off this title with one of their songs. Remember? The Tortures of the Damned.

Like I said, the list could go on forever. I'm trying to keep it short, but I can't help myself. This makes me angry.

Anyone ever heard of a band called, As I Lay Dying? That's a bad-ass name right? Do you realize that As I Lay Dying is the name of one of American author William Faulkner's most popular novels? No? Oh, you've got so much to learn.

Okay, one last example for you haters. The band Aiden is recording again, and this time lead singer Wil Francis is looking to a new place for inspiration. Literature.

He explained this in a brief interview in the latest issue of Alternative Press:

"I spent the last year or so just reading book after book after book, instead of sitting online and e-mailing people or watching TV. I've tried to expand my mind in a literary sense. Instead of writing every song about things that have happened in my life, I'm writing songs about stories, short stories that I've written in the past and turned into songs, or different things that I think are interesting."

Okay, I'm done. Seriously, if this doesn't prove the point that we're not all stupid and we understand literature, I don't know what will. That's really the beauty of music in general though. It can expand your mind into different avenues you didn't know were even out there. Hopefully, some people will recognize the literary influence on the alternative scene today and give us a little credit. We know how to read too!

Yes, I Ate the Last Slice of Pizza

Hey, has anybody noticed that our music scene is saturated with stick figures? That's right, I mean all those kids who look like they haven't eaten in about three years. Honestly, half the bands out there look like Kate Moss with tattoos. It's lame. Where's the love for us scene-sters with a little bit of extra around the mid section?

Well, as a dismayed music lover I have chosen to take a look around the business and find some awesome musicians who not only wear size XL tee-shirts, but freakin' rock too.

The first dude to come to mind is obviously Fat Mike from NOFX. He's an original.

Seriously, he was hefty before it was even popular to be skinny. NOFX has been around since 1983, and since then Fat Mike has been a vocal advocate for drinking in excess, eating too much and genuinely being lazy. A fat kid's paradise. He doesn't look like a rock-star, but he sure as hell lives the lifestyle. And even better, he's not ashamed of his weight. I mean, he's called Fat Mike!

Still need some convincing that it's okay to carry that spare tire around to the local shows?

Okay, well take a look at New Found Glory's bassist Ian Grushka. I don't know if anyone has ever seen him play with a shirt on. And frankly, it might be easier on the eyes if he did. He is by no means small, but it's cool. We've still got mad love, Ian. Seriously, who can't respect a dude who will play bass in the snow half-naked? Especially when he represents those of us that have bulked up a bit for the winter. Hell yea dude.

Hey drummers, don't think I've forgotten about you. Not everyone can be as small as Travis Barker. Case-in-point: Brandon Saller from Atreyu and Brandon Barnes of Rise Against. (note - being named Brandon does not automatically make you fat, nor does it mean you're good at drumming - they're two things you've really got to work on) Anyway, these dudes freakin' own on the skins, and they're not sticks. (pun intended) Plus they're both married. Finally, some hope that girls actually like normal looking guys. Yes! Personal win.

So there you have it. Chunky people can still rock. Don't get too down on yourself kids. If you're like me, and had to shop for "husky-sized" jeans with your mom when you were little, you now know there's hope. Besides, in a scene that prides itself on individuality, we're going to be the only ones who don't look like everyone else. With that said, I'm going to have a bowl of ice cream in bed and work on my figure. Now that's punk-rock.

What Would You Do?

It's time to evaluate your music morality.

Question:

If one of your favorite bands' upcoming record leaked onto the internet a few weeks early, would you listen to it? And moreover, would you still buy it when it was released?

I'm assuming most people would listen to it, and save the few bucks for something else. I'll play the role of saint on this one, though. I admit I try never to listen to leaked albums, and I'll always go out and buy the CD

when it's released. Thus is the case with the upcoming New Found Glory record, Not Without A Fight.

In the beginning of February, NWAF leaked all over the net and killed the ton of anticipation that was surrounding NFG's sixth full-length album. The band don't seem too worried about it though. They actually like the idea of fans responding early to the new music.

A post by guitarist Chad Gilbert explains their position:

"It is a bumm out that some of the anticipation is lost. the whole building up to release date loses a bit of its excitement but to be honest the fans that would go out of their way to download it are the true fans that go out of their way to buy merch and post online about how much they like it and are the ones that will know the words first and sing every song at the show. You are driven to get it because you like NFG so how can I be bummed at that!"

Well, as much as I respect Gilbert and his band, I'm still going to wait for the CD. That doesn't make me any less of a fan though. I'll still know every song on the album within a week, and will still be singing along when NFG comes to the House of Blues this spring.

So back off guys, I'm still going to be putting money into your pockets come March 10th when the album drops. I could easily just grab it now, but I won't. You've got to give some credit to that, right? I'd like to think I'm still a true fan.

It seems like commonplace lately that new albums hit the net early. NFG are just the latest victims. I won't preach to you, but I do have some advice. Stay true to who you are and your music morality. Download it if need to, buy the CD if you can wait. Go see the show, and pick up a shirt at the merch table. Just don't forget to support the band you follow, because remember, this is their career.

Blurring The Lines

Bud Light and Lime, a combination you thought you'd never see, right? The two just don't seem like they'd go together, but it's been done anyway. The same can be said for Hip-Hop and Rock 'n Roll. The two opposing genres are suddenly clashing as more and more bands team up with rap artists. But this scene kid isn't convinced the taste is all that sweet.

It seems like rapper Lil' Wayne is popping up all over the alternative rock scene lately. Late last year he did a guest vocal on "Tiffany Blews," a track off Fall Out Boy's latest album Folie a Deux. And now the rock-stars are paying back the favor as they will be appearing on Wayne's upcoming record Rebirth.

The Rap 'n Roll collaboration doesn't stop there though. Lil' Wayne has decided to take Gym Class Heroes out on tour with him this spring. It seems fitting as Gym Class Heroes are some sort of hybrid mix of Hip-Hop and rock. I mean, they're well known around the alternative rock scene. They have a guitarist, bassist, drummer and a rapping lead singer. Odd. They've played the Warped Tour, supported acts such as The Starting Line and the All-American Rejects and have gotten every suburban white kid at a show to throw his or her middle finger up in the air.

It just doesn't seem like it fits together all that well. Now, while I did enjoy watching all the 12 year-olds

acting "hood" at last year's Warped Tour during the Gym Class set, I'm still not convinced it's what the scene needs to survive. What ever happened to the days of punk bands playing their shows in kid's basements and backyards? (cough cough, Fall Out Boy - Dead on Arrival)

Maybe it's just me getting older and having some nostalgia for the original records and songs that changed my life, but it seems that the Hollywood influence of someone like Lil' Wayne on the alternative scene will do nothing but turn us into a corporate trend. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy "Tiffany Blews," but I'd much rather pump "Calm Before The Storm" through the speakers of my stock Honda Accord (that's right, stock - no wing on the trunk or rims).

But I guess complaining isn't going to get us anywhere, huh? So let's crack open a cold one and try to enjoy the music. Bud Light Lime? No thanks, I'll stick to an original. Toss me a Sam Adams.

Back to Basics: Finally, a Punk-Rock Tour!

Hey Boston, are you sick of winter yet? Are you thinking this horrid weather is never going to end? Well, don't let it get you down. You've got a lot to look forward to, believe me.

In case you haven't noticed, this summer is set to be huge in the alternative music world. Not only are blink-182 reuniting, but the Vans Warped Tour is making two stops in New England, Boston and Hartford. Is that enough to break your winter blues? No? Well, how about throwing another sweet tour into that mix, packed with an insane line-up. That's right Boston, on Thursday, Rise Against announced a summer headlining tour with special guests Rancid

and Billy Talent. And they'll be playing the House of Blues, twice.

Rise Against have been touring non-stop since early last fall. They're currently bouncing around the U.K., and will soon be heading off to Australia to give their international fans a taste of their latest album, Appeal To Reason. They'll be back stateside in May for Bamboozle, and come June, Rise Against will be taking the states by storm again.

Is this band really anything short of amazing? They've crafted their music, message and image on some basic ideals of equality, freedom and animal rights. Whether you agree with them or not, you've got to give them credit for standing up for what they believe in. Besides, their music transcends party lines. Democrat, Republican or Independent, I'm pretty sure anyone can feel something from songs like "Swing Life Away" or "Ready To Fall."

Rise Against have an amazing talent to blend heartfelt emotion with political activism and a message. They're a working man's band. They've gotten to where they are because of their dedication and persistence. And boy am I thankful for that, because now I get to see one hell of a tour this summer.

Now, let's not forget about the other awesome talent that will be joining the Chicago natives. Rancid are set to open for the entire tour. How cool is that? These guys are the fathers of modern punk-rock. They've been playing together since 1991, post Operation Ivy, of course. Think about it though, 1991. How old were you? Five or six? You definitely weren't sweating it out in the pit with Tim Armstrong. Neither was I for that matter, but it will still be awesome seeing the guys this summer. I wonder if Armstrong will still wear his leather jacket come late-July when they're in Boston. Hmm..

Billy Talent is also on the bill this summer. Don't know much about these dudes? Don't worry, most of America doesn't. They're Canadian, but totally worth a listen. Trust me, you'll like them more than our other Canadian friends, Sum 41. Billy Talent are actually really popular overseas (I first heard them in France, and have been hooked since),

but for some odd reason they haven't caught on in the U.S.. Maybe this tour can change that. They've got some really catchy hooks, and a sound that's all their own. And isn't that what all of us indie kids are looking for these days anyway? So make sure you show up when the show starts. You won't want to miss their live performance.

As for the tour itself, it's nameless as of now. I know, boring. But like I mentioned earlier, Boston is lucky enough to have two shows listed. July 28th and 29th at the House of Blues. How exciting, I know you all miss those late nights on Lansdowne Street.

So is that enough to make you smile? Did you forget the fact that it's snowing outside for a hot second? I hope so. Be happy Boston, you've got a great summer coming up. Awesome tours, awesome music and warm weather. It doesn't get much better than that kids.

Last October I was lucky enough to interview Rise Against on the day Appeal To Reason came out. They played two free shows in Boston that night. One at Newbury Comics, and another at T.T. the Bear's. It was small, intimate and one of the coolest experiences of my life. I would personally like to thank the band for being so kind to me (especially Tim, I'll never forget the handshake and the hug!). These guys deserve all the credit in the world. So thank you Rise Against, you helped me earn my first 'A' in graduate school. You've got a friend and a fan for life. Mainstream - The New Black

It doesn't look like Escape The Fate can escape the fate - the fate of online advertising that is. The truth is no band really can these days.

If your band is online, chances are you're on myspace. It's perfect, really. Fans can hear your

music, see your pictures, be "friends" with you, watch videos and leave comments on how wonderful (or crappy) your music really is. Sounds appetizing, doesn't it?

Myspace used to be a social site where bands could really reach their audience personally. But those days are dying, and fast. It was only a matter of time before myspace would find a way to make money off of all you hard-working bands out there. Advertising was the answer to that.

Now, where does Escape The Fate fit into this scenario? Well, we all know them as a slightly dark, glam-rock band from Vegas. They've been through it all. Girls, drugs, jail-time and black leather jackets.

You wouldn't really expect to see anything pink on their myspace, right? Wrong. Hit up the site, and try to watch their new video for the song "Something." Nine times out of ten you are going to have to first watch an advertisement by either Herbal Essences or Jack-In-The-Box. Now, Jack-In-The-Box I can handle, though I don't quite understand the actual advertisement. Herbal Essences on the other hand, just makes you laugh.

All you want to do is watch the video for the new mosh-pit anthem. You expect it to be dark, dirty and maybe a little bit greasy, like the band members' hair. But no, adjust your eyes. You first get hit with a bright pink advertisement. "Hydrolicious by Herbal Essences, which one does your hair thirst for?"

It threw me off when I first saw it. Honestly, is that necessary? I want to watch a video of four guys with flat-ironed, slicked-up hair, not an ad for women's shampoo. I guess you would call that irony, huh? A greasy-headed band with a shampoo ad before their video. It makes you laugh.

It doesn't stop there though. I dare you to give their music player a listen through. Yeah, the whole thing. I bet you can't do it without the player stopping to flash an ad asking you to "Take the Dumb Test" or get "Domino's Sandwiches" delivered to your house.

It's just lame. I doubt Escape The Fate actually eats those Domino's Sandwiches, or even gets a cut of the money from that ad on their site. And for that matter, I'd really like to know what they use for shampoo. Welcome to 2009.

As a side note, ETF will be playing the Middle East in Cambridge this Sunday the 22nd. They'll be joined by Black Tide, Burn Halo, William Control and Attack Attack!. I'll see you there, and don't forget to wash your hair kids.

Blink One-Eighty-Who?

It's been just over a week since the Grammys and it seems like the only thing people are still talking about is the Chris Brown/Rihanna drama. Not to make light of the situation, but we all know the story by now. He screwed up and now he's sorry. Wasn't there anything a little more exciting that happened on stage that night? Hmm...

Oh yeah, I seem to recall blink-182 reuniting somewhere between the Jonas Brothers' and Jay-Z's performances. The sad part is just that. The news went virtually unnoticed among all the big names. Here was one of the most influential bands of the alternative scene announcing they were going to start making music again, and most people couldn't care less.

When Mark Hoppus, Tom Delonge and Travis Barker walked onto stage together, I must admit I was standing in my living room clapping. I never thought I'd see it happen again.

On February 22nd, 2005 blink-182 went on an "indefinite hiatus." For four years, Delonge had no real contact with either Barker or Hoppus. But sometime after Barker's plane crash in September '08 the trio began talking again. I guess it's safe to say the talks mended friendships, and brought the guys an opportunity to present this year's Grammy for Best Rock Album.

When the news broke a few days early that blink would be appearing on stage together, online communities went nuts. Rumors and websites flared up stating the band were already in the process of recording a new record. With the alternative scene in a buzz and anticipation on high, all eyes were on the Grammys.

But boy, what a let down. The crowd was virtually silent when Hoppus announced, "blink-182 is back!" Granted some people were cheering, but they sounded like they were paid to scream. (just like the seat-fillers, only these people had to make noise)

Did anyone there not remember the impact blink had on music? They were an MTV sensation in the late 90s. They sold 1.5 million copies of Dude Ranch in 1997, debuted No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 with Take Off Your Pants and Jacket in 2001 and toured the world countless numbers of times. So why didn't anyone seem to care that they were finally back together?

I guess we'll never know. People constantly complain about the dismal existence of music nowadays, yet give virtually no credit to those who actually try to better it. It's sad to see such an awesome moment in music's subculture go without notice, but I guess that's life. All I know is there are plenty of people out there who are happy that blink is back. Maybe that's why my phone didn't stop ringing for three hours after the announcement.

Regardless of all these Hollywood haters, blink-182 are back! It's time to remember what pop-punk feels like. So get rid of that emo haircut and get off myspace. Go outside and get some sun, 'cause summer '09 is coming fast and our boys are set to be the soundtrack. (just like when we were in 8th grade, only better 'cause this time we can legally drink)

The Business of Paper Stars

So if you're like me, a jaded scene kid who has passed his prime, you probably spend most of your free time scouring the internet looking for new indie bands, local shows and a job where you can write about music post-graduation. It's pretty much the biggest waste of time on the face of the earth. But every once in a while I come across something interesting. This week's find had to be Hawthorne Heights.

I hadn't listened to them in a while, and I figured it was time to check out

what they were up to. So I clicked onto their site hoping to find some new tour dates. What I got was pretty much the exact opposite.

Surprise! Hawthorne Heights is recording again. Did anyone else not see this coming? Didn't they just release a record in August? Weren't they busy repairing their relationship with Victory Records? I thought so too.

Well, the boys from Ohio have been busy as of late. Once again, they are off of the Victory label. I just don't understand it. Hawthorne Heights spends two years battling over legal troubles with Victory, suddenly makes amends and six months later packs up and leaves. Whatever.

According to an early February post on their website, HH has just signed with Wind Up Records. They're also in the midst of writing a new record. That's good news for those of us who thought their August 2008 release, Fragile Future, lacked a little something.

But don't count on any tour dates in the near future. It doesn't look like the boys will be touring in support of Fragile Future anymore. That's a little disappointing to us Boston fans, who got left out in the cold this past November. Don't think we've forgotten about the canceled show at the Wilbur Theater. We haven't, and we won't. Well, that is until the next time HH comes within 75 miles of Boston. (that doesn't include you Providence, sorry)

It's kind of crazy to look at how much work these guys have been doing in the last year, huh? It's good to see their absence from the scene hasn't made them go belly-up. They're writing, they're recording and they're here to stay. So keep yourself updated kids. It looks like HH has a future that is anything but fragile.
